Volunteer Services Council

Mission Statement

Volunteer Services Council (VSC) for Western State Hospital’s mission is to promote and enhance the well-being of patients suffering from mental illness and contribute to their rehabilitation and recreational needs, which the state cannot provide by law or by limitation of funds.

Volunteer Services Council is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1971.  Every Western State patient is eligible for support from the Volunteer Services Council. All around the hospital, you can see the impact the Council is making – from the donated clothing and shoes in the clothing store located within the patients’ commons area of the hospital to the leisure activities found on each of the nine units and treatment malls.  All of Volunteer Services Council’s services and items are free to the patients.

Current activities and projects funded by VSC include:

  • Tickets and opportunities to attend special community events
  • Clothing, shoes, and other items through Clothes-R-Us
  • Summer ice cream social
  • Christmas gifts for residents
  • Assist with patient activities
  • Adopt-a-patient program
  • Provide funding for patient treatment programs such as the new Sensory Modulation Program
